Feeling tired, tense, and crazy-busy?
Me too!
The perfect antidote? Restorative yoga.
Here are three poses that can bring a little softness and ease to your heart and spirit by helping you release tension and tightness in your chest, upper back, and sides of your ribcage. I taught these at the beginning class on Sunday and it was pure magic! I’d recommend holding each pose for 5-10 minutes. If you’re short on time, just pick one. A little restorative yoga is a lot better than nothing.
And if you’re looking for some music to set the mood, check out my playlist here.
1. Supported Reclining Butterfly
Place a block (or stack of books) at one end of a bolster (or pillow). Sit facing away from the lower end of the bolster and lie down. Bring your feet together and allow the knees to open. If this is hard on your hips, you can place blocks or pillows under the knees. If the hips are still not happy with butterfly, extend the legs straight or place your feet to the floor. I’m using a blanket here to provide a little extra support for my head.
Rest your arms out to your side at a comfortable angle and feel a gentle stretch around your chest and the front of your shoulders.
2. Supported Straddle
Starting with the same setup as reclining butterfly, face the bolster and take your legs into a V shape. Lie over the bolster and allow your arms to drape down the side. Add more bolsters or pillows if that’s better for your back and hamstrings. (In class on Sunday, one student used 3 bolsters!) If you’re turning your head to one side, switch it to the other side halfway through the pose.
Feel a gentle stretch around the back of your heart and shoulders.
3. Supported Side Bend
Place the bolster in the middle of your mat. Sit your right hip next to the bolster and drape your body over. You can use a block or pillow to support your head. If it feels good, take your left arm over your had. You can place your legs into whatever position feels comfortable.
Feel a gentle release on the left side of your ribcage.
Repeat on the other side.
If you try these, I’d love to know what you think! And if you like this newsletter, please like, share, comment, and subscribe. Wishing you a restful Thanksgiving week.
