“Move at the speed of trust” has been one of my mantras while moving through the holiday season and preparing for the new year. I’ve been reflecting on how I can move at the speed of trust while at work, on my yoga mat, driving in the car, and even doing chores. The phrase comes from adrienne maree brown’s book, Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds, which offers strategies, philosophies, and practices for moving through change so that we can be adaptable and resilient. (I highly recommend it!)
Practicing moving at the speed of trust feels especially important (and challenging) during the holidays. The winter season lends itself to quiet contemplation as the nights (in the Northern Hemisphere) are longer. But it can also be difficult if you’re traveling and spending time with family. Still, I think this is a beautiful opportunity to notice how we are showing up for bodies and our spirits. Are we rushing to get things done or are we taking a moment to notice how a task, conversation, or something we saw on Instagram makes us feel?
Moving at the speed of trust doesn’t necessarily mean moving slowly, but it does mean that we take our awareness with us as we move through the world. I have plenty of examples of when I didn’t move at the speed of trust or when the circumstances of life just didn’t seem to allow for it. In fact, it’s one of the reasons why I stopped doing hot yoga for awhile and why I was excited to move from the busyness of California to rural North Carolina.
One of the great benefits of a yoga practice is that it can provide us with space and time to develop a sense of trust in ourselves. That being said, I’ve been to yoga classes where it seemed like the goal was to perform a pose “correctly” and please the teacher rather than focus on the union of our mind, body, and spirit. That’s why, as a yoga teacher, I offer lots of options and ideas so that students can take ownership of their own practice and how they want to connect to their body.
What does moving at the speed of trust mean for you as we come to the end of 2024? If you’d like some support and guidance, I’m now offering readings and healingsto help you connect to your own unique energy.
